Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 29 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt and Mrs Khanporia. Mrs Bolt is in class Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Khanporia is in class every Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.

Our PE lessons are every Tuesday and Thursday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it will always be linked to what your child is learning about in class. It will be an English and a Maths task :) This will be in a yellow homework book and must be returned to school by Wednesday the following week. It is really important that your child completes their homework on their own.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help your children to learn their spellings. Spelling will be recorded in a purple pirate book and your child should use the week to practice them.

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books can be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We have a special reading scheme to encourage reading and we receive prizes for reading certain numbers of books. We really enjoy this!  If you have any concerns please call in to see our teachers.

Our Learning

Autumn 1

Below is an outline of what we will be learning this half term.

We will start this half term by reading the story 'Silly Billy'. This story is focused on a young boy called Billy who worries a lot. We will use the story to help us write sentences and sequence the story. In class we will also be making our very own worry dolls!

This term we are also learning about 'Stories with a familiar setting'. We will be listening to 'The Bog Baby' where we will build on our sentence writing and use of conjunctions. We will explore the character in detail and begin to use adjectives to describe. We end the unit by building up to writing our own version of the story. Following on from this we will also be reading some poems and learning about instructional writing for recipes.

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, measure, money and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on our methods of calculation and using jottings, part-part whole and ten frames to help us solve different calculations. We will strengthen are knowledge and understanding of numbers to 100.

At the beginning of the unit we will use our 'chatty box' to explore the theme and add some questions to the box that we want to find out about.
