Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 29 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt, Mrs Khanporia and Mrs Tagari.

Our PE lessons are every Thursday and Monday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it will always be linked to what your child is learning about in class. It will be an English and a Maths task :)

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help you children to learn their spellings.

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books will be given out on a Monday and returned on a Thursday (for now).

Important dates to remember!

Wednesday 2nd September - School opens for the Autumn term

Friday 23rd October- School closes for half term

Our Learning

Autumn 1

This half term we have been learning about the story 'Silly Billy' and have been thinking of what we need to include in our sentences. We have also been focussing on the story 'The Bog Baby' in our unit 'stories with a familiar setting'. In this unit we will be building our sentence writing and developing our understanding of using adjectives, conjunctions and different punctuation in our writing. We will end the unit by writing our very own version of the story by changing the character of Bog Baby. We will then look at instructional texts (recipes) before finishing the half term learning about poetry.

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, addition and subtraction, shape, measurement and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on our methods of calculation and using jottings, part-part whole and ten frames to help us solve different calculations. We will strengthen our understanding of numbers beyond 50 and also number facts with those. We will explore 2D and 3D shapes and also different units of measurement.

Theme – Superheroes

Our theme for this half term is 'superheroes'. This is an exciting theme and a good one to start the year with! We will learn more about every day heroes and then build on our D&T skills to evaluate some superhero outfits. We will design and make our own too. We will also be creating some superhero music.

Science – Germs and Living things

'Germs and Living things ' is our science theme for Autumn 1. We will be considering what living things need to survive and also learn more about types of germs. We will also be conducting some exciting experiments on germs and hygiene!

RE- Christianity

This half term we will be learning about Christianity in RE. Children will share their own experiences and understanding. We will observe the world and consider ways of looking after it.

PE this half term will be gymnastics with the PNE coach on a Thursday. In those lessons we will learn more travels, shapes and balances to create sequences. Our second PE lesson will be on a Monday and our focus will be athletics and running, hopping, jumping, etc.

In Computing, we will use laptops, computers and IPads to learn more about a range of programs and tools. We will be creating self portraits and posters to begin. We will learn how to use the internet safely by reading the story 'Chicken Clicking' and sharing ideas. We will understand other uses of technology.
