Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 29 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt, Mrs Khanporia and Mrs Tagari.

Our PE lessons are every Monday & Wednesday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it will always be linked to what your child is learning about in class. It will be an English and a Maths task :) This will be uploaded to Seesaw.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help you children to learn their spellings.

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books will be given out on a Monday and returned on a Thursday (for now).

Our Learning

Autumn 2

This half term we are learning about persuasive writing. We are also focusing on traditional tales but with a twist! We will be listening to the traditional tales of 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and learn about repetitive language and key features of these stories. We will listen to alternative versions of those stories and form opinions on what we believe. We will also build our vocabulary to write our very own traditional tale.

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication, fractions, division, money and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on our methods of calculation and using jottings, part-part whole and ten frames to help us solve different calculations. We will strengthen our understanding of numbers beyond 50 and also number facts with those.

Theme – Winter Wonderland

Our theme for this half term is 'Winter Wonderland'. The theme will focus on Art and Geography.

We will observe some artwork in class and give opinions. We will also experiment with colour mixing and create our own amazing winter themed artwork. We will use paint and charcoal to complete this. We will explore the art work of the famous artist Andy Golsworthy and create our own artwork in his style. We will also be comparing places in Geography and learning to name and locate the World's continents and oceans.

Science – Survival and Growth

This half term we are learning about survival and growth. We will observe how living things grow and consider what humans need to survive. We will also look at ourselves and consider how we have changed from a baby to now.

RE- Christianity

This half term we will be learning about Christianity in RE. Children will share their own experiences and understanding. We will learn about advent, light and the Christingle. We will also cover some missed learning from Judiasm that was missed in Year 1 due to the school closure.

In Computing, we will use laptops, computers and IPads to learn more about a range of programs and tools. We will be exploring algorithms to follow and create codes for games. We may also even start to de-bug codes where errors are made.
