Welcome to Kingfishers

I would like to say a warm welcome to the Kingfishers class and Year 2. We are a class of 29 children.

The class teacher is Mrs Agnew and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bolt and Mrs Khanporia. Mrs Bolt is in class Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Khanporia is in class every Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.

Our PE lessons are every Tuesday and Thursday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school and that we are not wearing earrings on those days.

Homework is given out on a Friday and it will always be linked to what your child is learning about in class. It will be an English and a Maths task :) This will be in a yellow homework book and must be returned to school by Wednesday the following week. It is really important that your child completes their homework on their own.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and the children will be tested on them the following Friday. Please help your children to learn their spellings. Spelling will be recorded in a purple pirate book and your child should use the week to practice them.

We really like reading in Kingfishers so we ask our grown ups to listen to us read and comment in our reading diaries so that we can get our book changed – just a small comment and signature is fine. Books can be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We have a special reading scheme to encourage reading and we receive prizes for reading certain numbers of books. We really enjoy this!  If you have any concerns please call in to see our teachers.

Our Learning

Spring 1

Below is an outline of what we will be learning this half term. Any questions, please ask!

This half term we are learning about adventure stories and letters. Our focus text will be Wind In The Willows for adventure stories, where we will be using adjectives and conjunctions within our writing. We will be retelling the story before adapting it to create our own version. This is a fantastic book to learn about and I am sure everyone will enjoy it!

We will then move onto learning about letters and their features. We will gain confidence in our writing and build up to writing our own letters.

In our maths work we will look at a range of subjects including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, measure, money and LOTS more. We will really concentrate on our methods of calculation and using jottings, part-part whole and ten frames to help us solve different calculations. We will strengthen are knowledge and understanding of numbers to 100.

Theme –  Winter Wonderland

Our theme this half term is ‘Toys’. It will have a focus on the subjects History and DT (Design Technology)

In History we will be learning about toys from the past and how they have changed overtime, we will link this with our science knowledge and look at what they are made from, how old toys have been adapted and are still popular today before making comparisons and thinking about what toys would be like if those changes hadn't been made. We will then move onto DT where we will explore an existing toy cars, discuss what we like about them before designing and make our own using a criteria. We will test these out and complete our own evaluations using our findings.

Science – Materials

This half term we are learning about materials. We will classify and sort materials based on their properties and use scientific vocabulary. We will also use our knowledge to make predictions and test the materials to make houses for The Three Little Pigs. What do you think will be the best material?

RE- Hinduism

This half term we will be learning about Hinduism in RE. We will think about how people express their devotion to God. We will learn more about the deities. We will also learn  about special events and how we can make someone close to us feel special.

In Computing, we will be learning and recapping how to log on to Purplemash, staying safe online, how to save and retrieve our work and sort items on the computer. We will be following the purple mash units on questioning.

This half term we will be focusing on athletics and gymnastics in PE.
