Hello! Below is a link to a website which will direct to 50 free apps and websites to help you with your home learning. I hope you enjoy some of them!

Reading Week!

This week across Facebook and our website we are dedicating our themed learning to Reading and the importance of Reading both at school and at home. Each day we will be bringing you reading activities thats are simple and fun to complete at home as well as reading based tasks that are linked with some of our more tricky phonics sounds.

But first things first we set you a challenge. A reading challenge... have a go at completing as many of the reading based task on the reading challenge grid below.

Tuesday's Activities

To continue with our Reading week, today we are bring a range of activities for you to have a go and try out at home.

Build a word Duplo: Find some duplo and grab a whiteboard pen/white labels. On the larger bricks write a range of words. These could be tricky words/high frequency words or words that are within your child's phonics phase. On the smaller bricks, write the corresponding sounds that match the larger bricks.

Make a story shelf: Find an empty shelf and pick a few books you would like to read. Display the book on the shelf and find objects from around the house that link with the story. Such as small world animals, small world people. If your story is based in the woods, find some natural objects. Or if your story is based around a little girl who sneaks into a bears house and eats 3 bowls of porridge. Put some oats and miniature bowls on your story shelf. Use them to sequences, re-tell and act out the story. Can you change the story? Find an alternative character and re-tell the story to a grown up.

Todays phonics based activity: Revisit the Phase 5 sound 'ph'

                                                Alternative spellings for 'ph' sound

                                                Tricky Word Reading

                                                Reading numbers as words.

See the attached links below.

Wednesday's Activities

Welcome back to our Reading themed week across our website and Facebook. Yesterday we looked at word building as well creating a story space in your house in the form of story shelves.Today we bring you a few more tasks that can be done whilst you are at home completing your home learning.

Story Mapping: Story Maps are a great way of children recording a story using pictures. This map can be then used to re-tell the story without the use of having to re-read the book. This can then be used to change parts of the story by using 'post-its' to cover up the original pictures and then change the character or the plot. Children can then break up the story and re-write the story, solely using their story map. It is a great tool to use and is used within our Literacy lessons at school. Why not pick a story and have a go today? Here are a few examples.

Story Stones: This is a great little activity that is simple, fun and creative. First find some rocks/stones in your garden. Clean them and get any mud and other bugs off them, it makes it easier to draw/paint on them. Draw characters from different stories, different settings or even draw different plots from stories onto your rocks. These they can be used to create your own story or to re-tell different stories.

Todays worksheet based activities: Goldilocks Cloze Procedure. This activity is an independent activity that children can have a go on their own. Children selected the correct vocabulary to match each sentences.

Phonics based activity: Alternative for 'oy oi'

                                   Reading Tricky words

Thursday's Activities

Welcome back to our daily dose of fun, creative and wonderful reading based activities. Today we bring you some very special activities!

Reading Nook

The activity

In a nutshell – Making up a cosy spot just for book time is a great trick to create positive reading connections even for the most resistant little ones. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, just gather some fluffy pillows, pile up some books and separate your snuggly corner with a cardboard wall.

What you need –

  • Pillows
  • Books
  • Light
  • Cosy Accessories

Follow the Word Path

The activity

In a nutshell – Make a trail of cards with words that your kids have just learnt and turn them into a game. Let’s see who can get the furthest with spelling out all the words correctly!

To mix this activity up, you can use dice or get them to jump from one step to another on one leg to work on the gross motor skills.

What you need –

  • Colourful Cards
  • Pens
  • Dice

Todays phonics based activites: Alterntaive 'WH W' sound

                                                   Alternative 'OU OW' sound

                                                   Reading Tricky Words

See attached links below.

Friday's Activities

Well what a great week of learning we have had! To finish off our week, here are a few activities that can be carried through into the following weeks. I hope you have enjoyed our reading week.

Alphabet Museum

The activity:

In a nutshell – Create a DIY showcase with some cardboard boxes and write a big letter in the middle of each one of them. Have kids look for various, small items in the nursery and place them in a box corresponding to the letter they begin with. This activity can be a long lasting game if you change the ‘exhibition’ every now and then or move the boxes around.

What you need –

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Colourful papers
  • Pens
  • Tape
  • Small items

Who Am I?

The activity:

In a nutshell – It’s a classic, adjusted to our EYFS literacy needs. Tell each kid to first write down a word they have learnt recently and then stick it to their friend’s forehead so that they can guess what the word is without looking at it. Feel free to play around with the questioning rules to make sure that all the little participants can get involved!

What you need –

  • Sticky Notes
  • Pens

Apps for Reading

The following website has a range of free reading books which can be selected based on book band. We use book stages however, please see the word document attached which shows book stages and matching book bands.
